Why We Grade Our Students: A Quick Recap of Our Philosophy

The goal of our free Emily Co. curriculum is to create lifelong learners; we believe self-directed researchers are what the world needs.

The curriculum is child-directed and play-oriented. Lots of time will be spent in nature, drawing, brainstorming, listening to music, and at the library. That’s not to say there won’t be loving guidance from parents!

To keep a record of education and to perform assessments, an art-filled learning journal is kept by each student. They fill this learning journal with all the information they come across- their illustrations, summaries, reviews, creative work, and more. This journal and practical hands-on projects replace traditional homework assignments.

We created this resource because we found that the majority of the free resources for homeschooling families were overly religious or traditional. We also think the industrial era practices in traditional schools are ineffective for elementary schoolers.

All components of the lessons are designed with psychological variance and developmental disabilities accommodated by the format. We believe in constantly evolving to adapt to the needs of our students.

Still, The other contributors to this curriculum hold advanced degrees in education, psychology, English, computer science, and more. They are supervising the primary author to ensure the curriculum is well-rounded.

And each district has its own requirements for homeschoolers- and this usually includes some form of assessment.

So to measure progress in the Emily Co. Curriculum, students are absolutely graded.

Below you will find the rubrics for the different kinds of assignments you’ll find in a free Emily Co. Lesson Plan. To learn more about the components of an Emily Co. Lesson Plan, click here.
