The Emily Co. Curriculum Homeschooling Experience

Coastal library with large windows overlooking the ocean and people reading inside

The Emily Co. curriculum is a preschool and elementary school level curriculum. It is an affordable resource for homeschooling families and professional educators.

Please send your feedback to our contact information, and we’ll respond with tips and adapt the curriculum to your needs in future releases. We want these lesson plans to be ever-changing and constantly updated to suit your family’s goals. Additionally, community is vital for families. It takes a village of support! We also have a Facebook Group and a WhatsApp group chat for parents of homeschooled children.

Everyone’s path is different and you may choose to homeschool all the way until college. However, for middle and high school, we recommend enrolling students in a private or charter school, for connection and academic rigor. We do offer advice on how to gain acceptance and scholarships for these schools. Click here for more information on gaining admission to a private or charter school.

There is also an adult adaptation of the Emily Co. Curriculum, which can be used for self-study to fill in gaps in your own education.

The goal of our Emily Co. curriculum is to create lifelong learners; we believe self-directed researchers and innovators are what the world needs to make this jump into the future. We also believe the root of being successful is self-knowledge and good habits.

Our aspiring nonprofit organization, Emily Co., also creates internships and labor unions in key fields, and collects art supplies and books for people in need. Please contact us to join in these activities!

You can also contact us for help finding other resources, like affordable childcare, extracurricular activities, tutors, and mentors.

Instead of repetitive drills and constant stress about memorization, like students would experience at a traditional elementary school, with the Emily Co. curriculum students are taught to learn anything they’re interested in for themselves.

The curriculum is child-directed and play-oriented. Lots of time will be spent in nature, drawing, brainstorming, listening to music, experimenting with new ideas, and at the library.

To keep a record of education and to perform assessments, an art-filled learning journal is kept by each student. They fill this learning journal with all the information they come across- their illustrations, summaries, reviews, writing assignments, creative work, and more. This journal and practical hands-on projects replace traditional homework assignments.

We created this resource because we found that the majority of the free resources for homeschooling families were outdated or limited, especially when it comes to the needs of neurodiverse students. We also think the industrial era practices in traditional schools are ineffective for elementary schoolers.

All components of the lessons are designed with psychological variance and developmental disabilities accommodated by the format.

Together the creators of this curriculum hold different perspectives. The primary author is currently preparing for a master’s degree in Learning, Teaching, and Educational Transformation.

The other contributors to this curriculum hold advanced degrees in education, psychology, English, computer science, and more. They are supervising the primary author to ensure the curriculum is well-rounded.

Components of an Emily Co. Lesson Plan

Each lesson plan by Emily Co. includes the following completely free:

  • a milestone-achieving goal setting session that includes both students & their parents
  • recommended extracurricular activities
  • instructions for the parent on how to guide learning for this topic
  • instructions for the student on what they should plan to include in their learning journal
  • a five-mins or less lecture introducing the topic (a written version and a video version)
  • a vocabulary list with spelling, definitions, and synonyms
  • a recommended reading list as a jumping off point for research
  • while the student adds to their art-oriented learning journal, the parent supervises
  • next, an integration and imaginative play meditation
  • after research there’s a practical applications project
  • then, a proofs and presentation stage. During this step, the student highlights anything important in their learning journal, commits it to the memory…and makes their work so far suitable for their creative portfolio.
  • then, an oral narration session takes place. This is when the student sums up aloud to the parent what they learned, and you can open a discussion with them.
  • lastly in each lesson plan there is a self-assessment guide, so the student can know when they’re ready to move on to the next topic.
  • Each lesson plan also includes a test-out option, where students can prove they already know the information and move on to the next topic sooner.

At the end of each year, there is a multi-subject comprehensive final exam offered, in case your state requires you to prove the student is meeting competency milestones. This final exam is unique- it has a written portion, and an additional portion where they use drawing, music, videography, or another creative medium to sum up their knowledge on these topics.
